Alex Sommer manages public affairs campaigns for Tusk with a focus on policy and communications strategy in New York, New Jersey and beyond. He works on proactive engagements to pass legislation and regulation in fields as varied as AI and animal rights.
While at Tusk, Alex also served as Senior Communications Advisor and speechwriter for Yang for NY, where one publication recognized his work by noting the campaign had a “very good speechwriter.” Alex’s recent work builds on past successes, including leading policy development and rapid response for US Senator Robert Menendez’s 2018 reelection campaign.
Earlier in his career, Alex was Senior Associate at Mercury. Among his several client engagements, he helped coordinate coalitions and press for a winning $1 billion statewide higher education bond referendum in New Jersey as well as for a coalition pursuing federal immigration reform. Alex also worked at the boutique law firm where he focused on securities and antitrust litigation.
Alex has also volunteered for candidates and organizations to guide both press and voter protection efforts. One opinion piece he helped draft for a winning candidate was the most read op-ed in 2020 on a NYC political news site. He also served as the Democratic National Committee’s State Lead for Voter Protection in Indiana during the fall of the 2020 election, where he helped assemble the statewide infrastructure to respond to instances of voter suppression. And in 2016, he worked on Hillary for America’s presidential campaign as a Voter Protection Captain and as a member of the vetting team.
Alex received his J.D. cum laude from Fordham Law School, and his B.A. from the University of Wisconsin, graduating Phi Beta Kappa. Alex lives in Brooklyn with his wife, Megan.
